Smiling About Life
59Who Paid Nathan Dubray's Rent?
Nathan Dubray of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, was in trouble. He had no way to pay his rent. It was Christmas Eve, 2008. He was broke. There was no way to raise the money in time.
Many of us have been in similar situations. Despite our best efforts, life can sometimes be brutally harsh. We must forge ahead because as surely as life can be cruel and unforgiving, it can also bring the most unexpected of blessings. There is always hope.
Mr. Dubray became a shining testament to the wonders of life on that very Christmas Eve. Sometime during that day, a note was delivered to him. It said that his rent had been paid in full. It was signed simply "Christmas Angels."
Amazed, he went to his landlord. Yes, the rent had arrived earlier that day. No, there was no clue to the donors. No name on the envelope. No return address. The payment was in cash, so there was no check to provide information. His benefactors would remain anonymous.
Mr. Dubray is now having a wonderful Christmas. He never found out who his guardian angels were. All he knows is that somewhere out there are some very special people, the kind of people that we all should be, the kind of people that we must strive to be.
On those days when you find yourself alone, isolated, lost in the world, remember that there are people who care for us and love us, even when we are not aware of them.
Thank God for them.
